NEWS: High Court Finds Stephanie Otobo Liable for Defamatory Publications Against Apostle Johnson Suleman

      The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja Judicial Division has reportedly ruled in favour of Apostle Johnson Suleman in a defamation suit filed against Stephanie Otobo, awarding damages amounting to ₦100 million.




According to court documents dated May 5, 2026, the case, marked Suit No. ID/ADR/2226/2022, was presided over by Hon. Justice O.O. Abike-Fadipe. The claimant, Apostle Johnson Suleman, had approached the court over a series of publications and online statements which he described as defamatory and damaging to his reputation and public image.


The court documents stated that the claimant alleged that several statements and social media publications made by the defendant portrayed him in a negative light, accusing him of misconduct and other actions capable of injuring his reputation as a religious leader and founder of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide.


During the proceedings, the claimant tendered documentary evidence, including online publications, videos, and transcripts, while witnesses testified in support of his claims. The court noted that despite being served with court processes and hearing notices, the defendant neither filed a defence nor appeared before the court through legal representation.


In its findings, the court held that the claimant successfully established his case on the balance of probabilities and that the publications complained of were defamatory in nature. The judgment further stated that the evidence presented by the claimant remained unchallenged throughout the proceedings.


Consequently, the court awarded ₦100 million as damages in favour of the claimant. The court also directed that an apology be published on platforms where the alleged defamatory statements were circulated, including selected national newspapers and online media platforms.


The ruling marks another significant development in Nigeria’s legal landscape regarding defamation, online publications, and reputational protection in the digital media era.
